Tattoo Removal Aftercare What to Expect and How to Heal Smoothly

6.15.2025

Whether you’re clearing the canvas for something new or saying goodbye to a tattoo that no longer fits your story, laser tattoo removal is a powerful tool for transformation. At Remedi Day Spa, we offer state-of-the-art removal with PicoSure®, the most advanced laser technology available for effective, gentle, and precise results.

But just as important as the treatment itself is how you care for your skin afterward. Proper aftercare plays a key role in ensuring your skin heals beautifully and your results are as smooth and seamless as possible.

Here’s everything you need to know about what to expect after your session and how to care for your skin in the days and weeks that follow.

First Things First: What Happens After a PicoSure® Session?

PicoSure® uses ultra-short pulses of energy to break ink into tiny particles, which your body then naturally eliminates. It’s powerful, yet less invasive than traditional lasers, and it typically requires minimal downtime.

Immediately after treatment, it’s normal to experience:

  • Redness and tenderness in the treated area

  • Swelling or a sensation similar to a sunburn

  • Whitening or frosting of the skin (temporary)

  • Minor blistering or scabbing (especially with darker or older ink)

These are all signs that your body is responding to the treatment and beginning the healing process. Most people find the discomfort very manageable and short-lived.

Your Tattoo Removal Aftercare Guide

1. Keep the Area Clean and Protected

For the first 24 hours after your treatment:

  • Gently clean the area with cool water and mild, fragrance-free soap.

  • Pat dry - don’t rub!

  • Apply a thin layer of a healing ointment like Aquaphor or Vaseline.

  • Cover with a sterile, non-stick bandage.

Keeping the area clean and protected helps prevent infection and promotes faster healing.

2. Avoid Picking, Scratching, or Shaving

As your skin heals, it may itch, scab, or peel. This is completely normal, but resist the urge to touch or pick at the area. Let any scabs fall off naturally to avoid scarring or pigment changes.

You should also avoid shaving over the treated skin until it’s fully healed.

3. Stay Cool and Dry for 24–48 Hours

Avoid hot showers, saunas, pools, and sweaty workouts for the first couple of days post-treatment. Heat and moisture can irritate sensitive skin and slow healing.

Instead, opt for lukewarm showers and gentle cleansing. Give your skin a few days of rest, it deserves it!

4. Say No to Sun Exposure

One of the most important rules of tattoo removal aftercare? Protect your skin from the sun.

Sun exposure before and after treatment can lead to:

  • Increased risk of hyperpigmentation

  • Slower healing

  • Greater sensitivity during your next session

We recommend:

  • Keeping the area covered when outdoors

  • Using a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ once the skin has healed enough to tolerate it

Sun safety is a must throughout your full removal process, especially during the summer months.

5. Hydrate and Support Your Immune System

Laser tattoo removal relies on your body’s lymphatic system to clear away the shattered ink particles. That means your internal wellness plays a big role in how quickly and effectively you see results.

To support your body’s natural detox:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Eat antioxidant-rich foods

  • Don’t smoke

  • Get good sleep and manage stress

When your immune system is thriving, your tattoo fades faster.

What About Follow-Up Treatments?

Tattoo removal is a gradual process. Most clients need a series of sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve full clearance or fading. After each visit, you’ll follow the same aftercare routine to ensure optimal healing and comfort.

At Remedi Day Spa, we’ll work with you to create a personalized removal plan based on your tattoo’s size, age, ink color, skin type, and goals. Our team is here to guide you through the entire process from consultation to final results with care, expertise, and unmatched technology.

Ready to Begin Your Tattoo Removal Journey?

Tattoo regret is real, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. Whether you’re lightening ink for a cover-up or removing it altogether, our team at Remedi Spa is here to help you feel confident in your skin again.
